Tips for Parents during Unsettling Times

--          Adults can help restore children's sense of security by modeling calm and in-control behaviour.

--          Students may need a lot of reassurance. Kids may have questions about personal safety.
Let them know that you and the school will do everything possible to keep them safe.

--          Try to maintain normal routines and schedules to provide a sense of stability and security.

--          Be a good listener and observer. Let children guide you as to how concerned they are or how much information they need.

--          Students may experience a range of unsettling emotions: sadness, fear, anger, and a sense of loss. Adults should seek assistance if children exhibit significant changes in behaviour and/or uncommon reactions over an extended period of time.

--
Expect and respond to changes in behaviour. All children will likely display some signs of stress.
It is important to maintain consistent expectations for behaviour.

--          Continue with enjoyable activities at school and home to reinforce children’s sense of stability and normalcy. Provide opportunities for kids to be kids and have fun.
